It is actually true that you don’t need funding to do your research. But consider when you have downloads of voluminous materials relevant o your topic and you seems lost and couldn’t just get the right ones that is most suited to your work.
I know no research is ‘free’ to produce and share,
there’s the salary of the researchers, just like the teacher, the nurses, the
doctors and other professions. Ordinarily a researcher might find it more
easier to lay hands on existing and finished work. But all that comes out of it
for sure is close to 90% pirated. I mean plagiarism, repetitions and jargons. I
mean it’s all is PIRACY.
The professional researcher needs organizational
infrastructure (e.g. tech, desk-space), libraries, and the costs of downloading
resources and utilizing applications that are not so easy to come by.

I come from a sociology background. My B.Sc. research titled “Teenage Pornography: causes, effects and solutions”. Could have all happened through me finding the time to sit and do a metric tonne of reading and synthesising of materials that I access through my university library and on the internet. I can do my literary studies research and writing without needing to talk to a single other person or having to travel far. For instance, as at the time of writing my research, there was no previous research done in respect to that topic at my university library (Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma), not even in Benin, Abraka to mention a few. I had to travel to Ibadan. But does that actually solve my problem?

I know it’s the kind of question you’ve got to
ask yourself when you think you have smartly do a copy and paste. These are just
what some so called project writer does. Some had been wise to pay an EXPERT, some
say they have been publicly shamed for saying it in the midst of friends, colleagues
and even parents that their research work was outsourced to a RESEARCH
CONSULTANT. When colleagues have talked about it, they get shushed –
sometimes seriously because naming such a situation runs counter to the dizzy
fiesta of funding that our institutions and research sector crave. Big lie there is none of such policy in the Nigerian institutions.
The attitude of declaring that you don’t need
money to research could be indicative of a failure of the imagination. Maybe
you can’t think of a research project of a scale and complexity that needs
funding to happen. In our current academic world, you cannot say you don’t need
money for research. You can’t say it because it’s a career-limiting move.
Because, if you say that, it means you don’t intend to spend money to get
knowledge and more importantly an ‘A’ or ‘B’ in a six unit course. Think of
what will happen to your CGPA.
Lecturer have been extorting money, I mean huge sum from research students insisting
they would do research on their behalf. But at the end, you had rather benefited
nothing because you don’t know how he does his sourcing, calculations, analysis
etc. you are totally lost and even you don’t know what you have written.
I know I’m talking about a relatively small slice
of the academic world who can diligently assist you in getting a perfect masterpiece
with little amount unlike the huge amount collected by those corrupted teachers.
But they’re a part of our university systems and research sector, too. They’re
there as good colleagues, supervisors and mentors, productive researchers, and
contributors to new knowledge. They just don’t need to that huge cash to seek their
services or expertise.
